In a scathing editorial, it said: “Britain needs — and deserves — more than a cautious, technocratic Labour prime minister.

“It needs a transformative leader who would use power with purpose.”

They also panned his lack of political agility over Beergate.

It came as ex-PM Tony Blair said Labour would only return to No10 if it backed Tory policies on Brexit and law and order.

Mr Blair called on Labour chiefs to make it clear “we’re not rejoining the EU or revisiting the decision”.

He said they can win back disillusioned voters with a tough biometric ID policy to crack down on illegal immigration.
