Detectives investigating rapes and murders are ‘working from home’

DETECTIVES are investigating rapes and murders from home, it is reported.

Several forces have adopted “hybrid working” meaning officers can carry out inquiries from their kitchen table.

Some WFH officers are based in areas with the UK’s highest crime rates.

Simon Kempton of the Police Federation said  “pretty much any” probe type could be done with a laptop and phone.

He said “Whether it’s shoplifting or a murder or anything in between.”

Hampshire, with the seventh-highest crime rate of 43 forces in England and Wales, has adopted the approach.

Zoe Wakefield, of the Hampshire Police Federation, told The Telegraph hybrid working worked.

She said: “For example, in our main investigations department, different teams will take it in turns to be the duty team to deal with people in custody, then they obviously have to be in the building.

“But when they are on their inquiry days, they could either be in the station or be at home.”
