End of cash machines? You can now get up to £50 cashback in thousands of shops without buying anything

YOU no longer need to make a purchase to get up to £50 cashback at thousands of retailers.

In April the government relaxed rules on shops offering cashback in notes OR coins without requiring customers buy anything.

New post-Brexit rules make it easier than ever for shoppers to withdraw cash and coins

Under EU law, a business wanting to do so had to register with the Financial Conduct Authority, a lengthy and expensive process.

But new post-Brexit deregulation cut that requirement.

More than 1,000 retailers are already part of the Cashback Without Purchase scheme, with 1,000 more expected to join by the end of 2021.

Branches of major chains including Sainsbury’s, the Post Office and Londis are set to join.

Withdrawals of any amount between 1p and £50 can now be made at the till, regardless of the notes available at your nearest cash point.

Following a year-long trial scheme, ATM operator LINK will accelerate the rollout alongside payment service PayPoint.

The regional pilot scheme saw shoppers in Staffordshire, Wales and Scotland made almost 25,000 transactions at an average value of £27.81.

More than £680,000 was withdrawn.

Consumers can find their nearest Cashback Without Purchase location using LINK’s Cash Locator website and app.

The widget also lets users see the charge for cash at each location and its opening hours.

John Glen, economic secretary to the Treasury, said: “It is great to see LINK and PayPoint taking advantage of the legislative changes we made earlier this year.

“The cashback at the till service stands to make a real difference to local communities.”

LINK consumer council chair Tracey Graham added: “Protecting access to cash is absolutely vital for millions of people who depend on it.”

Retail fixtures including Asos and Amazon also run cashback schemes, Sun Savers has explained.

And you can even get cashback on your pricey energy bills.

But it’s not all good news, with dozens of TSB branches shutting as in-person demand falls.

Santander also shuttered 111 sites this summer, leaving the chain with 425 banks nationwide.

And HSBC announced it would close 82 branches in 2021.
