Jeremy Corbyn savaged by Labour MPs begging him not to block Brexit and drive away millions of voters

LABOUR’S Brexit civil war plumbed new depths today as dozens of Jeremy Corbyn’s MPs begged him not to abandon Leave voters.

The leftie leader was rumoured to be on the brink of coming out in favour of staying in the EU after a second referendum.

Today he summoned his top team for a crunch showdown to thrash out Labour’s fresh Brexit position – but saw off an attempt to go all-out for a second referendum immediately.

At the same time 26 of the party’s MPs wrote to him warning that if Labour backs Remain it will be “toxic” to Brexiteers – blasting: “The UK must leave, and do so without further undue delay.”

One of Mr Corbyn’s closest aides, policy chief Andrew Fisher, has drawn up a dossier saying Labour should back a referendum on any Brexit deal.

Currently the party’s official line is to push for a referendum in order to block a bad deal or a No Deal scenario.

The leader was reported to support the argument after sitting on the fence over a so-called “people’s vote” for months.

But during the Shadow Cabinet meeting today, he said: “We have committed to respecting the result of the referendum, and have strongly made the case for an alternative plan for Brexit as the only serious deal that could potentially command the support of the house.

“I have already made the case that it is now right to demand that any deal is put to a public vote.

“A ballot paper would need to contain real choices for both Leave and Remain voters. This will of course depend on Parliament.”

This morning party chairman Ian Lavery appeared to lash out at Mr Corbyn and his allies, tweeting: “Please understand their position really is to head for revoking A50.”

Article 50 is the legal mechanism taking Britain out of the EU.

Mr Lavery later claimed his Twitter account had been hacked by a mysterious online troll.

This afternoon Mr Corbyn was sent a letter from 26 MPs, mostly representing Leave areas, pleading with him not to tack towards Remain.

The group said: “A commitment to a second referendum would be toxic to our bedrock Labour voters, driving a wedge between them and our party, jeopardising our role as a party of the whole nation, and giving the populist right an even greater platform in our heartlands.

“Labour has a vital role to play fighting for a Brexit for the many, not the few. But this is a battle best fought in stage two, after the UK has left.”

Ringleader Caroline Flint later added: “No to any Brexit risks a No Deal Brexit.”

Other MPs to sign the letter included John Mann, Dennis Skinner, Dan Jarvis, Lisa Nandy, Ruth Smeeth and Sir Kevin Barron.

  1. I'm not surprised this traitor wants another referendum, they must have vote rigging off to a fine art by now.
