UBS Experts Wrong Again

Image
The experts at UBS forecast an economic crash for the UK and an exodus from the City if we voted to Leave the EU, threatening to move 1,000 jobs out of the country as a result of Brexit. It turned out there was no crash and the bank u-turned on its Brexodus scaremongering. They were wrong then, and they’re wrong now… Before the World Cup, UBS deployed a team of 18 analysts and editors and ran a computer simulation of the tournament 10,000 times. They determined Germany would win. Yesterday the Germans crashed out in the group stage, finishing bottom after a humiliating 2-0 defeat to South Korea. In 2014 UBS said Brazil would win – they lost 7-1 in the semi-final. The Government should ignore the special pleading from false voices of business

Image
If we were to believe the so-called voice of business, the world would be flat and the UK about to fall off the edge on Brexit day. The recent manifestation of “Project Fear” mark III , clearly a blatant attempt to frustrate and stop Brexit by organisations and businesses which have openly declared their opposition to it, is a shocking, anti-democratic intervention in the body politic. Some simple facts should be noted when weighing the narrow self-interest on which these interventions are based. Only 8% of UK businesses export to the EU. These exports represent just 13% of the economy. In fact 17% of the economy is related to exports to the rest of the world and 70% is domestic. Even a so-called ‘hard’ Brexit – which is actually global trade on World Trade Organisation (WTO) terms – would have only a marginal (if any) impact on exports to the EU, while it would considerably boost the 87% of the economy not related to the EU. As sterling is at a more competitive rate than it was on ref...

Why Daniel Hannan never “went native” in Brussels

Image
It was fascinating to see Daniel Hannan MEP in the hot seat at the Adam Smith Institute’s series on “Freedom’s Fighters” last week. A series of questions elicited just why he has become a star among the long-standing Brexiteers and he gave some penetrating insights about why the European Union is not something of which we should be part. Amazon.co.uk Widgets The European Parliament, for example, represents an outlook which is pro-closer union, pro-internationalist and which favours the views of the elite they call “enlightened,” often against the interests and wishes of the peoples they are supposed to represent. It has the power to grant diplomatic immunity to any of its members threatened by legal action in individual countries, but in practice it grants that power selectively. Those who follow the EU “consensus” are granted it readily, whereas more sceptical members are often denied it. It supports the established outlook of the elite and discourages those who wo...
