What is the Nord Stream 2 pipeline?

The Nord Stream pipelines are a system of off shore gas channels in Europe.

The first pipeline commenced construction on April 6, 2010 and was completed on June 21, 2011.

The second addition started development in May of 2018 and wrapped up building in September of 2021.

Nord Stream 2 runs from Russia through Siberia and finishes in Germany.

Who owns the Nord Stream 2 pipeline?

The Nord Stream system of pipelines are owned by Gazprom international projects LLC.

Gazprom international is a subsidiary of PJSC Gazprom, often considered the “largest gas company in the world.”

Per Nord Stream 2’s official website: “Gazprom is a global energy company focused on geological exploration, production, transportation, storage, processing and sales of gas, gas condensate and oil, sales of gas as a vehicle fuel, as well as generation and marketing of heat and electric power. “

The site also says: “PJSC Gazprom is the largest supplier of natural gas in the world, accounting for approximately 15 percent of world gas production.

Why is the Nord Stream 2 pipeline significant?

The Nord Stream pipelines are the center of much international and geopolitical debates.

The purpose of the Russian aqueduct system is to bring their natural gas supplies to Germany and the rest of Europe.

The United States, along with several European nations opposed Nord Stream 2 in 2021.

Many countries involved with the NATO Alliance expressed concern that Nord Stream 2 gives Russia the potential to weaponize energy supplies against other European nations.
