I’m stuck in a dead-end job because my sister dropped out of uni twice

DEAR DEIDRE: MY sister is the reason I’m working in a dead-end job that I hate. It’s all because she blew the university nest-egg our parents had saved.

I was in sixth form when she dropped out of university, having done two years of a business studies degree.

Mum and Dad saved for us both but couldn’t afford for us to be at uni at the same time

She then had some time out but decided to go back, just when I was about to apply.

Mum and Dad had saved for us both but couldn’t afford for us to be at university at the same time, so my sister got priority.

They told me I could go later.

I now work in a supermarket and have been there since I was 18. I’m now 22.

My sister is now back living with us, having dropped out a second time.

Dad was made redundant last year so there’s no way I can ask to go to university now.

DEIDRE SAYS: Some people forget that student debt is their debt – it’s not down to their parents to fund their studies.

Any student grant is means-tested and you could still go without financial support from your parents.

You’d have to be careful with your finances, but it is perfectly possible.

Studying in the EU can prove even cheaper. There are scholarships and bursaries available, too.

Check out UCAS (ucas.com) for advice. Good luck.
