Ikea runs out of mattresses in some stores due to lorry driver shortage

IKEA has run out of mattresses in some of its stores as it struggles with supply chain issues due to driver shortages.

The Swedish retailer said is facing difficulty supplying many of its product lines, including mattresses, to UK customers amid the ongoing issues.

Ikea is among the retailers experiencing supply chain issues.

All 22 idea stores in the UK are experiencing problems and shoppers have reported some outlets completely running out of mattresses.

An IKEA spokesperson said: “Like many retailers, we are experiencing ongoing challenges with our supply chains due to Covid-19 and labour shortages, with transport, raw materials and sourcing all impacted.

“In addition, we are seeing higher customer demand as more people are spending more time at home.”

The retailer also said they are experiencing “low availability” in some of its ranges including mattresses.

The spokesperson added: “ We hope this will reduce as the situation improves in the coming weeks and months.

“Going forward, we’re constantly looking for more opportunities to secure product availability for our customers and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”

In the meantime, customers have been posting online to complain that mattresses are out of stock.

One Twitter user wrote: “We are trying to purchase a mattress but your lakeside store says the Hovag are discontinued but you have another one taking its place, can you help as no one seems to know the name of it etc.”

Another posted: “How can IKEA make their beds a specific size that only THEIR mattresses fit but NEVER have the mattresses in stock? Sort it out @IKEAUKSupport and your £40 delivery is also a joke.”

A third user tweeted Ikea saying: “I want to buy either the Hyllestad or hokkasen in a super king, they’re on the website, and I can put them in my basket, but not available for delivery or collection?”

Another wrote: “@IKEAUKSupport Hi. I’m looking to purchase your Hovag mattress in either a standard King or a 140 x 200. Ideally for collection from Leeds. Both sizes are currently showing as out of stock for both collection and delivery any idea if this a short or long term issue?”

Ikea replied to customers saying the Hyllestad, Hokkasen and Hovag mattresses have been affected by supplier issues and apologised for the inconvenience.

It comes as retailers, restaurants and services, including council bin collections, have seen disruptions as experts estimate the nation faces a huge shortfall of 100,000 drivers.

Nandos was forced to close nearly 50 branches last month after running out of chicken.

McDonald’s last week warned of a nation-wide shortage of milkshakes at its more than 1,000 restaurants.

Meanwhile, Tesco’s chairman John Allan has warned that there could be a shortage of Christmas stock.

Elswhere, bottled water and fresh fruit and veg are among the products that have been missing from supermarket shelves.

Disappointed Greggs customers have been posting images on social media of empty shelves at the bakery’s chains.

The shortage is causing supply chain issues to several industries, leaving supermarket shelves empty and forcing many restaurants, takeaways and coffee shops to take items off the menu.

It has been blamed on a range of factors such as staff self-isolating due to Covid and European drivers returning home after Brexit.
