RIP Charlie Watts – you were one of a kind and a world-class drummer, even at 80

THE heartbeat of the Rolling Stones is still. But what a life Charlie Watts led:
Rock royalty almost as long as the genre has existed.
A world-class drummer, even at 80.
A multi-talented artist with a love of jazz and a great sense of humour.
A fashion icon with a dress sense as impeccable as his timing behind the kit.
A clean-living Englishman who survived almost six decades alongside Mick and Keith, shunned (almost) all their hard-living excesses and claimed to find growing a beard exhausting.
A father and a devoted husband for 57 years despite the temptations on the road.
The Stones will go on rolling.
But they cannot be quite the same.
Our thoughts go out to his family, friends and the band he joined in 1963.
RIP Charlie. One of a kind.

Border failure
WITH the sun out and the Channel calm, the record daily totals of migrants sailing over from France may continue to soar.
The Labour Left, many opposed to any borders, will never understand why these illegal crossings enrage a public which largely supports rescuing thousands of Afghans from Kabul.
But the latter face tyranny or death.
Those camped at Calais are merely fleeing French inhospitality.
Most have no legitimate asylum claim here, but know they will get fed and housed anyway.
What voters crave is control.
We choose to save families from the Taliban.

What happened with speedy deportations or offshore processing? What deterrent is there?
The answers are nothing and none. Instead we just block-book hotels and build accommodation.
Our Government blames France for letting the boats sail.
That won’t wash.
We are an island nation, outside the EU yet still unable to control our borders.
Only Labour’s feebleness on immigration spares the Government a fatal backlash.
Tea potty
GENERATIONS of kids have adored the charmingly potty Tiger Who Came To Tea, unaware it was leading men to rape.
That, at least, is the even more bonkers claim of woke warriors Zero Tolerance, a women’s rights charity.
They’re OK with a talking tiger inviting himself into a family home and scoffing everything.
But not with him being male.
Or with dad taking everyone out for dinner.
By a quantum leap of logic this “reinforces gender inequality”, leading to sexual violence.
It’s easy to laugh at these idiots, deranged by Twitter’s arms race of wokery.
But don’t they see the serious harm they do with every swivel-eyed utterance?
As with Extinction Rebellion, they are enemies to their own cause.
