Drive down the cost of a motoring holiday to save hundreds of pounds

HIRING a car to head off on a mini-break?

A week’s rental is a whopping £200 higher than this time last year, says icarhireinsurance.com.

So I’m racing to the rescue with these easy ways to drive down the cost.

TOP DEAL: Sixt is offering up to 20 per cent off rentals on or before August 31. The deal is valid on hire lasting between three and 27 days. See sixt.co.uk.

SOMETHING BORROWED: It is unlikely a mate would be able to lend you their motor but Get Around (uk.getaround.com) is the next best thing. It is similar to Airbnb but for cars. People local to you rent out their runarounds. You use the app to unlock the vehicle and drive off.

Prices are more reasonable than professional car hire and, being local, it might be more convenient too.

AIR WE GO: You might not be flying but heading to the airport for car hire might help you save money.

There are usually numerous rental companies at airports and all that competition can mean better prices.

LITTLE EXTRAS: Bringing your own car accessories can save you cash. Children’s car seats can cost around £10 per day.

Bring your own sat nav, too, to avoid forking out for one at the hire desk.

EXCESS FOR LESS: Those used to hiring vehicles might already know about excess liability — the amount a driver must pay if the hire car gets damaged or is stolen.

Excess waiver insurance protects drivers from having to make big payouts but is also the largest cost for travellers after the rental fee itself.

Many hire-car companies offer a combination of policies, totalling on average around £188 a week.

But finding your own separate cover could prove much more cost-effective.
