Leave Article 50 bill alone or risk abolition, Lords told

Senior Conservatives have warned the Lords that it will face public outrage and abolition if it goes ahead with a plan to defeat Theresa May over Brexit.

A coalition of Labour, Liberal Democrat and crossbench peers will amend the prime minister’s Brexit bill to make clear that EU citizens who were in Britain before the referendum will be allowed to stay in Britain.

Britain's upper house of parliament has been given "a pretty powerful message" to pass legislation to start Brexit talks and not delay Prime Minister Theresa May's timetable for leaving the European Union, a government minister said on Sunday.

In interviews with local media, David Lidington, the leader of the lower house of parliament, said the unelected upper chamber should respect the vote to leave the EU at last year's referendum and the support given by the House of Commons.

Members of the Lords from the opposition Liberal Democrats say they will try to attach conditions to a bill giving May the right to trigger Article 50 of the EU's Lisbon Treaty, which may derail a pledge to launch divorce talks by the end of March. Eminent Tory peer who defected from the Liberal Democrats is pleading with her former colleagues to avoid a “cheap political stunt” by trying to delay Brexit. Baroness Nicholson has accused peers who try to slow down the Brexit bill as it enters the House of Lords of “disrespect” to the “ordinary people” who voted in the referendum to leave the European Union.

Combined Labour and LibDem Lords are on course to defeat the government, which does not have a majority in the Lords. However, Lord Lamont of Lerwick, the former chancellor, was among Tories to say that peers would face “outrage in public opinion and outrage in the House of Commons” should they attempt to alter the bill. Lord Lamont branded the amendments an attempt to place 'conditions' on Theresa May's Brexit talks.

He told Sky News's Sophy Ridge on Sunday: 'I hope the amendments will be roundly defeated in the House of Lords and I think they are playing with fire if they want the House of Lords to survive.
'I don't think it will deserve to survive if they wreck this Bill.'

It is the backlash from the public the Lords really fear and SO THEY SHOULD! Comments below...

  2. In my opinion, it should be abolished anyway. They are nothing but a bunch of freeloading, decrepit, lazy waste of space.

    1. Submit a UK petition to vote on removal of the House of lords. If the government can threaten to remove them, then there is no need for them anyway.

  4. Ironic that the Labour and Liberal 'lords' are supposed to be anti establishment except when it suits them or line their pockets. Be on notice, if you screw the pooch on the triggering of Article 50, you will all feel the wrath of the British public. It has been shown when all the smug self-satisfied elite absolutely pooh-poohed the electorate on Brexit, absolutely convinced we would vote to remain...how's that working out for you?

  5. We,the people are sick to death of those who are trying to derail,or block the largest vote the UK has ever known. Do you really think in your wildest dreams that we will allow any institution that does not honour the result to continue. We will strive in our millions to vote any such institution To be disbanded. It may be time for these over privileged so called Lords to retire

  6. There once was a good reason for the Lords. It was meant to protect the people from bad laws or acts passed by the commons MPs.However many of the Lords now have vested interests elsewhere which give them 'nice little earners' seats on company boards etc.Unfortunately some are in the pay and pocket of the EU and therefore there is a conflict of interest which none seem to have declared They will fight tooth and nail to keep their dosh. However they must realise that Joe Punlicensed is on to them
THEY WRECK BREXIT AT THEIR PERIL AND WILL BE MADE TO PAY!
